As the fourth quarter starts and students start dreaming of summer, the time for the multicultural rally approaches. The multicultural rally is an event where students showcase their cultures. This is done through students dressing up in cultural clothing and dancing to traditional music. Although the rally can be an event of excitement for many, people might not know what work goes into the rally and what they might expect to happen on rally day or during the rally.

The Set Up

Although the multicultural rally may just be a blip in some students' lives, it takes a lot of work and time. One example of this is the time the ASB class takes to plan it out. In an interview with Jessica Lucas- an ASB vice president candidate- stated that ASB “prepare[s] for it as soon as the winter rally is done, so whenever we are in ASB class for a few months.” They work to decide what cultures will participate in the rally and try to make a broad selection, that way “everyone feels represented,” according to Jessica Lucas. Additionally, on the day of the multicultural rally ASB also has to set up lights, the sound system, etc. Although the work of ASB is important for the rally, the students also put a lot of work into preparing for the Multicultural Rally. Months before, auditions are held to decide who will dance in the next multicultural rally. After making that selection they prepare after school to perfect their dances. They do this until rally day.

What to Expect

On the day of the Multicultural rally students setting up and participating in the rally will be excused from class early, and all students will have a rally schedule. This schedule can be seen on the school website under “Calendars and Bell Schedules.” Each period is about 40 minutes except period 4 which is 2 hours. The rally takes up one hour of the time and the other hour is dedicated to classwork. During 4th period your hall will be excused on the loudspeaker, and you will leave your bags in class. During the multicultural rally you can expect to see a variety of cultures, including “Latino, Filipino, Cambodian, African, etc.” (Jessica Lucas). These cultures in the past have presented traditional dances such as the Salsa, Tininkling, etc., and students can expect to see similar showcases of these traditions.

After the rally is over you will be told to go back to class and resume work. Although students can expect many changes to their schedules, the Multicultural Rally will serve as a showcase of student’s vibrant cultures. It will also illuminate the hard work that goes into preparing for the rally from both ASB and the students.
