Week of Welcome Inspires Incoming Freshmen

Abigail Keller

Summer ended weeks early for the CVCHS Link Crew as they planned and prepared for the Week of Welcome of the Class of 2028. This orientation filled with information and fun activities is sure to have made a lasting impression on the incoming freshman class.

Program Director Sarah Lovick and her Link Leaders directed the Class of 2028 Week of Welcome from Tuesday, July 30 to Friday, August 2. Over four days, the Link Leaders immersed the incoming freshmen into the CVCHS campus through tours, games, club day, and wrapped up the week with a carnival. During Week of Welcome, freshmen bonded with their classmates and browsed what different extracurricular activities CVCHS had to offer.

Freshman Grace Bell attended the Week of Welcome and noted that the orientation was an overall great experience.

“I thought the Link Leaders were really nice and helped make everything seem more welcoming,” said Bell. “I felt like I knew a lot more people and the campus felt a lot less nerve-wracking.”

One of the major activities Week of Welcome hosted is the end-of-orientation carnival. During the carnival, Link Leaders assisted in a variety of games in order to promote positivity and camaraderie amongst the incoming freshman class.

Madison Bautista, a junior Link Leader at CVCHS, noted that the carnival was one of the best parts of the orientation.

“I think the carnival was the most fun part of orientation for both the Link Leaders and a lot of the freshmen too,” said Bautista. “It was definitely the highlight of my week, and I hope we were able to make it fun for the freshmen as well.”

During Week of Welcome, the Link Leaders gave freshmen many words of encouragement, wisdom, and advice in order to excite them for the start of high school. Bautista shared the most crucial lesson she promoted to freshmen, in hope of inspiring them to take on high school confidently.

“The biggest piece of advice I have for the freshmen is that high school goes by so fast,” said Bautista. “For me, freshman year felt like it was yesterday, and if you aren’t living life as much as possible, you are going to look back and wish you did.”

Continuing after the 2024-25 school year begins, the Link Leaders plan to visit the freshman PE classes once every month on Friday. These ‘PE Push-Ins’ are meant to educate, inspire, and encourage the Class of 2028 to be open to all the new experiences CVCHS offers.

Through the Week of Welcome, as well as the incoming PE Push-Ins, the Link Leaders are sure to motivate the Freshman class and show them the values of being an Ugly Eagle.
