SPECIAL REPORT: Katie Volynets v.s. Venus Williams

Conner Emery

Venus Williams scored her first victory in a singles match since 2021 over former Clayton Valley Charter High School student Katie Volynets.

The elimination perpetuates a streak of Volynets struggling to advance in premier tournaments. The furthest she has reached in a Grand Slam competition is the second round, and Williams closed off the ASB Classic as well.

Nonetheless, Volynets has held strong in Wild Card qualifications for the main draw. Volynets prevailed in the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 18th National Hard Court Championship at seventeen years old to qualify for the U.S. Open, and two years later, she was playing on Wimbledon grass as a Wild Card. In 2022, Volynets qualified for both the Australian and French Opens.

Volynets walks away from the ASB Classic defeated, but her career is starting strong overall. Within three years of turning pro, she has placed in the WTA Women’s Singles top 150 and played in every single Grand Slam competition.
