CVCHS Puts on College Bound Day

Mia Bello

College Bound Day was a huge success. The Clayton Valley student body had the chance in early October to explore many great opportunities to help them prepare for college and their future careers. The day was filled with college campus visits, SAT and PSAT testing, college prep workshops, and ended with a keynote speaker on the CVCHS campus.

Starting this year, both freshmen and sophomores were able to go on college visits. Students were able to visit Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, San Jose State, Saint Mary’s and many more. They interacted with current students at these schools and had the day to experience the college campus, hoping to help provide future options for college selections senior year.

With the new “Profile of an Eagle”, CV students will now have the opportunity to visit two college campuses of their choice – one campus each during freshman and sophomore year. These visits are beneficial for those who are unsure of what they would like to do for their future education and for those who simply want to get a feel for college life.

The juniors were able to take the PSAT, preparing them for the SAT that they might take later in the year. The PSAT is a preliminary test of the SAT to evaluate where you stand on the SAT. It helps students practice what will be on the SAT and find out what they may need to work on and improve in. In contrast with the SAT, the PSAT is shorter and scored out of 1520 while the SAT is scored out of 1600 points. The sections are also shorter as well.

The seniors were on campus and had the choice to either take the SAT or participate in college workshops and informational presentations. The presentation that was given allowed students to learn more about Diablo Valley College and possible career paths that can be taken through community college. They were also given a presentation about Financial Literacy programs from Junior Achievement of Northern California. The third presentation was given by the school’s counselors, regarding financial aid and the different approaches that can help students afford college.

To close the day, there was a special keynote address from Zach Gowen, a professional wrestler and speaker. Gowen talked to the students about chasing their dreams and not letting anyone tell you what you can and cannot do. He motivated the students to find their dream passion and fight for it, just like he did; not letting any challenges knock them down.
