CV Ramping Up Dress Code and Phone Policy

Mia Bello

Dress codes and phone policies have been topics of debate for years. Recently this year Clayton Valley has enforced a stricter dress code and a new classroom phone policy. These updated guidelines are intended to promote a productive learning environment without any distractions for the students. They are put in place to help create a focused and respectful classroom environment while maintaining a boundary for students to express themselves.

The new phone policy requires students to store their phones in the classroom provided caddies or in their own backpacks. The use of cell phones is not required or allowed during class time. Students are also not allowed to bring their phones with them during bathroom breaks. Compared to last year, the phone policy within classrooms is much stricter. Many students have mixed feelings about it.

“The phone policy honestly helps me focus on work more since it's not with me,” senior Anjanette Taguinod said.

This shows that it is beneficial to students and their work productivity. Some students do believe that their phones should not be on the caddies as they should be able to keep them on themselves in case of an emergency. But generally it seems that the phone policy has been beneficial for the student body.

The updated dress code is relatively the same as previous years but the administration had been lenient on it these past years. This starting school year the dress code has most definitely been enforced more than usual. Last year many students would say that the school barely had a dress code and that they could wear whatever they wanted. But this year they have updated the dress code and along with hiring a new Director and Discipline & Athletics/Activities Head; Jarod Scott. The dress code is aimed more at girls, but still affects the student body as a whole, as one student comments, “I don’t really like the dress code since now all the money I spent on clothes, I can’t even wear anymore,” said Taranjot Kaur, another senior at Clayton Valley.

Although the dress code is not harsh, it will definitely take more time to adjust to it, as last year it was much more lenient. The main purpose of a dress code in the first place is to create a classroom environment where students can focus and be free of distractions.

Dress codes can be controversial, but the main goal is to ensure that students can be productive in a learning environment, helping further their success in the classroom and encouraging professionalism for future careers. If a student is deemed to be violating the dress code, they will face disciplinary consequences.

The dress code and phone policy are simply made to help steer students toward success in their academic endeavors. They help set boundaries to create a focused environment to work and study. This will become beneficial for the students now and in the future.
