Clayton Valley’s Marching Band and Color Guard performed holiday jingles and other tunes at the Grove in downtown Clayton on Dec. 2 to celebrate the Clayton tree lighting. The performance started at 5:30 p.m., but many band and color guard members arrived 90 minutes early. Many students were tuning instruments, playing on the play structure, and practicing before the show.
According to senior Color Guard member London Bailey, “[The atmosphere] was cheerful, bright and jolly. The band was playing all together and having fun.”
The Marching Band and Color Guard also did a performance pre-run around 4:15. The pre-run went well as band director Javier Cerna and band volunteers helped set up and directed students where to stand. Around 5:30, the marching band and color guard performed in front of a lively crowd. Some songs they played included “Jingle Bells”, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “Joy to the World.”
Senior drum player Andrew Dorado loved playing the holiday jingles, saying “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” was his favorite.
The CVCHS Band also played some of their stand tunes, including “7 Nation Army”, “California Gurls,” and even a solo by a drum line towards the end. Both band director Javier Cerna and drum major Lexi Reeves conducted. When asked, Reeves said “revisiting [their] stand tunes” was her favorite part. With each song, the crowd was filled with excitement. The cheers felt continuous and lively.
“It was a good opportunity for our Marching Band and Color Guard to be promoted publicly,” said senior Color Guard member Maryrose Gonzales.
Cerna was quite impressed with the band’s overall performance.
“I thought it was great and well received,” he said.
The night was a success for the CVCHS Marching Band and Color Guard with an already triumphant season under them!
