After working tirelessly for many months, the CVCHS drama and technology departments are

placing the final touches on the spring musical’s debut.

Director Elizabeth Emigh and her drama students will perform the 25th Annual Putnam County

Spelling Bee musical comedy in the CVCHS multi-use room three times, with 7 p.m. shows on

Feb. 9-10, and a 3 p.m. matinee on Feb. 11. The musical tells the story of a fictional spelling bee where six outcast teenagers compete in the academic championship of their lives.

Junior Sean Maniti works as the stage manager of the play and notes that the technology

department has been developing the design together for over a month.

“On the tech side of things, we have been practicing and preparing since December. We come in after school and create something to go with the set,” said Maniti. “Next week, we will be starting to collaborate with the drama side of the play.”

Addison Grimesey, a seasoned performer for CVCHS’ past productions, plays the starring role of Rona Lisa Peretti. She details the hard work and countless hours that go into such productions, especially during the weeks leading up to opening night.

“February is probably the busiest month because there is a lot of running back and forth with

activities. But it is something that I look forward to because it’s my thing and is what lights a fire inside me,” said Grimesey. “I enjoy being up on stage and singing, especially being able to do it with some of my closest friends. It’s just a very magical experience.”

As exhausted members of the production work countless hours, tech week is still a fun

experience that excites everyone for the performance to come.

“Tech week is when we get a little extra boost when we are feeling tired, worn down, or

stagnant,” said Emigh. “We get special lights, props, and costumes, which gives the play a new light.”

To advertise and promote their play, cast members work together with campus organizations to make sure that the play has a sizeable audience.

“In order to promote the play, we perform a portion of the play at the pep rally, as well as set up posters around the school campus,” said costume designer Abbey Elwood. “We also advertise the play on social media, and go around town to spread the word as much as possible.”

It’s clear that the cast and production team have come together, uniting their individual strengths into something bigger and truly special.
