CV Choir Puts On Radiant Luau

Kaitlyn Drummond & Zoie Avery

The CVCHS Choir Luau made its return this fall after a long layoff, and it was a successful night enjoyed by all.

The event started in the early evening with everyone getting dinner in room M1, where they served bread rolls along with pineapple, chicken, pork, rice, macaroni salad, and a choice of water or tropical nectar.

Shortly after dinner, the Women's ensemble performed Tiny Bubbles, Women’s Carol, and Wisemen by Elvis. Then, the Concert Choir and Show Choir performed Under the Boardwalk, Minoi Minoi. Lastly, the Show Choir performed Lava. There were 3-4 different age groups of young women hula dancers who performed, and at the end, the hula dancers brought 18-20 people up to learn a dance with which they had to compete to see who was the best at said dance. The winners were Jamaur Santos and Kylla Massarweh.

Nayelli Bautista, the concert choir representative, was asked if she was nervous for the Luau.

“Not really, I was nervous because the parents were going to be there and everything,” Bautista explained. “Even though I’ve been in choir for three years now, I still get so excited for performances because the bonding experience with all the choirs is very nice.”

When asked about the Choir Luau, Liz Emigh, the choir teacher, said: “It was great to bring the Choir Luau back. It had been an annual event for a dozen years, but came to an abrupt stop during COVID. Unfortunately, Da Island Way, our regular hula troupe, didn’t come out of COVID whole, and we lost our entertainment. We were able to forge a new relationship this year with Matahani Tahitian Dance Studio, which had several performers from Da Island Way. The lower quad is a great venue with its little stage and the warm weather was very accommodating.”

Emigh was happy with all aspects of the event.

“The event was very well-received, drawing a 150-person audience. The audience dined on authentic Hawaiian food, catered by the choir alum family at Oasis Cafe.”

Lastly, Emigh added: “I feel pleased that our tradition is back now that CV Choirs and their families know what a great event this is. I expect strong attendance and excitement in the future. We will always start the year preparing Hawaiian music for the event. Hopefully next year I can bring back the fire dancer!”

The CVCHS Choir Luau was a fun way for all of the choirs and their families to connect over their hard work, amazing performances and bond over amazing food.
