The spring welcomed baseball to Clayton Valley, and with the season now coming to an end, the 2024 team proved to be determined and resilient throughout all their efforts. With a final record of 11-13, the Eagles faced difficult opponents and long games; however, they continued to persevere, letting their hard work shine through in the moments when it mattered most. Throughout the season, the team had multiple walk off wins, shutout games, and amazing plays that displayed their efforts, and the power of not giving up.
This season not only brought fond memories for the varsity team, but also a once in a lifetime opportunity for the players as they were able to play a game against Freedom High at Oracle Park in April. Although they left with a loss, the sheer occasion of playing on a professional baseball field, especially one that is home for many of the players’ favorite team, was an experience that the boys didn't seem to take for granted. The atmosphere among the team, and memories being created on a professional diamond, was a magical feeling that surrounded each and every varsity player.
The freshmen and junior-varsity baseball teams also came out for the trip, supporting varsity and watching them play on such iconic turf. They were also able to warm up on the field, take pictures, and stand in the same spots that some of their favorite superstars stood. The feeling of brotherhood was extremely prominent throughout the city of San Francisco that day, and the Clayton Valley baseball team is who to thank for it.
With eight seniors on the varsity roster this year, the team was piled with leadership and support. Many of the late inning rallies or difficult plays were made by these seniors, or influenced by them. Jerry Coakley, Kenji Tello, Luke Hillshiem, Damyn Vanedvior, Aiden Romero, Dylan Cesario, Henry Phifer, and Dylan Pitts all made a huge impact on the 2024 Eagles, and were honored during the final game of the season, with a “Senior Night” ceremony.
While many of the seniors stood out this season, Cesario, a starting pitcher, proved to be a star for the team. Not only did Cesario pitch two complete no-hitters within his first year on varsity, he also brought wins and necessary energy to pick up his team when they needed it the most. Just last season, Cesario’s average time pitching was less than a complete inning. However, this season he completely transformed himself into becoming the team's most reliable arm.
Although the fate of this season may not have been exactly what the team was looking for, next season continues to look promising for the Ugly Eagles. With continued efforts during practices and early mornings for training, next spring will hold another great opportunity for a successful season here at Clayton Valley.
The Eagles also had the opportunity to work with “Story of the Season” this year, which provided weekly recaps on the team. The chapters are filled with stats, pictures, interviews, and other media that serve as an amazing opportunity for players to remember their achievements with each game.
