Choir, Wind, and Orchestra Join Forces to Perform Fall Concert

Cyrus Aleali

Disclaimer: This concert is now sold out.

The chamber orchestra, wind ensemble, and women’s ensemble will be performing the Fall Instrumental Music and Choir Concert at Clayton Valley Charter High School on Wednesday, October 18 at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Use Room. Admission is free.

Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Women’s Ensemble students have prepared to perform multiple pieces for the concert. The orchestra will perform the Korean folk piece Doraji Taryeong arranged by Benjamin P. Snoek, Kingdom Dance by Alan Menken, from the Disney movie Tangled, and Voyager by Soon Hee Newbold. The wind ensemble will be performing Ruckus by Randall D. Standridge and Nathan Hale Trilogy by James Curnow. The choir and wind ensemble will both perform Baba Yetu by Christopher Tin, from the video game Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization. The women’s ensemble will be singing Faith is the bird that feels the light by Elizabeth Alexander, Songbird by Sarah Quartel, and Be Like the Bird by Abbie Betinis.

Clayton Valley's instrumental music director, Javier Cerna, described the tone of some pieces yet to be performed.

“Our wind ensemble is doing a fun percussion piece called Ruckus and a three movement suit called Nathan Hale Trilogy, about an American patriot. They’re also doing a joint piece with the choir called Baba Yetu,” Cerna said.

“We’ve been preparing for this concert since the beginning of this school year. Both band and orchestra have been working on a bunch of different pieces to perform at the fall concert coming up.”

Shedrick Ronque, a percussion player, revealed what he likes the most about practicing and performing music. “Well, during practice, there's some funny moments that aren’t exactly the best, but are interesting. Although, I will say the real prize is when you play it really well all throughout, it just sounds so nice and it's so good.”

Cerna expressed one of his favorite things about teaching his band students. “Obviously it's the reward, the gratification of having a great performance, the students on stage getting to share all of their hard work with their parents and having it appreciated in a public form, that's always great.”

Henry Sheriden, a tuba player, displayed his assurance in the wind ensemble. “I'm pretty confident in it. Baba Yetu is not the most complicated song, so I'm sure we’ll sound really good.”

Cerna summarized his faith in his students for the fall concert. “I’m not nervous about it at all. I think that depending on how hard we work the next few weeks will determine just how great of a performance it is, but I am very confident that they'll be ready because they’ve been doing a great job.”
